Let's work together!
Conflict is unavoidable in life, but it does not have to be a burden. Actually, conflict can be a healthy part of the human experience! Learning skills to respond to and come to resolution with conflict of any kind is beneficial for everyone. When it comes to family law cases, it’s personal. Your roles as a parent, partner and wage-earner are affected, but will these changes make a positive or a negative impact going forward? It’s my goal to help both parties with the former.
My Story
Born and raised in Colorado, I have a natural appreciation for nature. I love spending time with my family, including my four children (three of which are no longer “children”), dogs (Ares and Ethan) and grandkitty (Pebble). In my free time you can find me behind a camera lens, reading a book, writing, volunteering, or cooking.
In 2002 I was a young mother trying to navigate a difficult and unsafe situation. A pro bono attorney ended up helping me navigate both an Allocation of Parental Responsibilities (“APR”) case and a protection order. I was so grateful for his assistance that I was inspired to help others who were in my situation as well – overwhelmed by the process and in need of guidance.
I joined the alumni of Kaplan University in the Fall 2008 and received my Paralegal Certificate in Spring 2009. During my time at Kaplan, I was able to not only receive instruction and information about being a paralegal, but the last sixty days of the program our class participated in individual internship opportunities. I was able to intern at a bankruptcy and family law firm as well as one in downtown Denver specializing in insurance defense.
That same spring in 2009 I started my career as a family law paralegal in Boulder, Colorado. Through the next fifteen years, I worked with four firms in the Boulder and Denver County areas. My first firm where I spent six years, I was inspired by the attorney I worked for who offered mediation and arbitration in addition to his litigation practice in family law. It was thrilling to see family law cases being handled with such a firm grounding for resolution where an agreement was able to be reached. The last six years of my paralegal career was spent at another firm with an attorney who also prioritized settlement over litigation. These two attorneys gave me a solid foundation for conflict resolution.
In 2014, I was encouraged by the attorney I worked for to attend the mediation training with the legendary and incredibly talented Judy Mares-Dixon, M.A., through the Colorado Bar Association. After completing the 40-hour training, I obtained my Mediation Certificate.
In December, 2024, I made the decision to put that certificate to good use. I started a journey focused more on my passion for helping folks, specifically through conflict resolution, rather than through a litigation lens. My time as a paralegal offered me an opportunity to assist people during difficult moments in their lives. I took phone calls from clients experiencing fear, anger, and other stages of grief. Because I was the intermediate between the client and the attorney, I had a specialized role that was far more supportive emotionally, which I loved.
Being in the realm of family law for a decade and a half, I am apprised of the Court procedures and deadlines. I am familiar with the process of dissolution, legal separation and allocation of parental responsibility cases and can guide clients through them from a general information standpoint while leaving the legal advice to the attorneys. Trained in Colorado Civil Rules of Procedure, relevant statutes and the basic timeline for cases is extremely beneficial as it relates to the complete resolution of a domestic case.
